Bady hamster Kidney (BHK21) cell cultures were passaged 15 times using serum replacement. Newborn and foetal calf sera. The confluent sheets of cell cultures were inoculated with FMD virus in multiplicity of infection 1:100 The harvested virus was titrated after 24 hours and was its antigenicity estimated by complement fixation (CF) activity.

The results revealed that the FMD virus, harvested from inoculated BHK cultures passaged by foetal calf serum was higher than that of serum replacement and newborn calf serum in virus and CF titration.

Also, there is no significant difference between the serum replacement and newborn calf serum when used for BHK cultures passages for FMD virus yield.
