Summary

A tissue culutre (SP) vaccine ( Kenyan Strain ) was inoculated ( one and 10 doses ) into cattle that were subcutaneously challenged by inoculation with a virulent lumpy skin disease ( LSD) virus. Vaccinated cattle had markedly reduced lesions compared to non-inoculated controls.

In cattle receiving one sheep dose of vaccine the duration of LSD lesions was about 21 days compared to approximately 15 days in cattle given 10 sheep doses of vaccine. All of cattle inoculated with one dose and two of three cattle inoculated with 10 doses of vaccine were protected from generalised LSD while all three non-vaccinated controls experienced generalised LSD following challenge inoculation, two control died.

The Kenyan strain of sheep pox vaccine induced sufficient cross protective immunity to protect cattle against a severe LSD virus challenge.
